Spring is in the air, and it’s one of our favourite seasons at Jindabyne Sports. We’re talking park sessions, goggle tans, bluebird days, and +10 degree weather. As the weather becomes a bit more unpredictable, layering is the key to staying comfortable and looking great. Whether you’re enjoying sunny spring laps in the park or heading out on some early season hikes - layering will be crucial to your comfort. Although the sun may be shining warmly in the afternoon sky, the temperatures can change rapidly this time of year.
BACK TO BASE-ICS
Get the base right and everything else will fall into place. A good base layer keeps you warm whilst wicking sweat and heat away from your body, so when you’re out in a sunny spell you won’t overheat like a boil-in-a-bag chicken. Your ideal base layer should be close-fitting and snug, but not tight or uncomfortable. And when you finally put your feet up in front of the fire after a long day outside, you want a base layer that looks good too. Merino wool is a perfect choice – naturally wicking, incredibly soft, and it looks real good too.
FIND A MIDDLE GROUND
Next up you want a mid-layer. Pick something lightweight such as fleece; a warm and snug material that is compactable enough to stash into a backpack at lunch when it warms up. There’s nothing worse than overheating and getting your head and arms stuck in a sweaty, stiff mid-layer! We highly recommend getting a mid-layer that zips up, so you can unzip to release some heat if you’re in that awkward to-de-layer-or-not-to-de-layer stage.
THE FINISHING TOUCH
Your outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. We recommend a lightweight shell as opposed to an insulated puffy jacket, with lots of venting options, such as underarm zips. Zip ventilation is a great feature that allows you to unzip as needed and let off some steam as you ride. The idea is that the more layers you have (and the more adjustable elements) the more options you have to control your body temperature by adding or taking off layers.
